First, my ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
********Victim Chya Saleh - One day in jail for beating death*******
I have read about this case when it was on the news, and this is so bad that it is good. In other words, it is so horrible and unbelievable, that now it is actually funny. Here is the link to the case:

Soon they will be sentencing murderers to a couple of HOURS of jail.
================
And now, some more headlines typical of headlines you can find on
http://www.justicemonitor.ca/archivedcases.htm
Brad Neuman, victim Mary-Lynne Miller - beating victim dies after three years in a coma, killer serves three years in jail
Gerald Richard McLean - Violent child sex offender released one year into sentence, wanted by police
Paul Gordon Olsen - Paroled criminal with 70 convictions re-offends
Scott Kindt, victims Robert Helme and Aaron Stewart - Untreated two-time killer to be paroled after serving four years
==============
Keep in mind, that you have to multiply all of the sentences by 0.4, to get the time the criminal will actually spend in prison.
In a recent "Exhibit A" episode, when the police confronted the murderer (the victim's husband) with proof that he is the killer, he told them "It is better to spend 5 years in prison than having to live with this woman for the rest of my life." He was sentenced to 10 years. He was released from prison "on parole" after serving 4 years.
All criminals are eligible to apply for parole after serving 40% of their sentence, and most of them get it.

Does Canadian law stipulate an age below which a child cannot be left alone?
A
No. The age at which you may legally leave your children to care for themselves and/or other children is a jurisdictional issue that varies by province or territory. To find out how the legislation affects you or what to consider before allowing your child to look after himself or other children, ask to speak to an intake worker either at your local Children's Aid Society (listed in the white pages of your telephone directory) or the government department in your province or territory that deals with family services (listed in the blue pages of your directory). I wouldn't worry about it.
