It is horribly unfair that Goetz was arrested and had to face a trial. According to U.S. law: "A person may not use deadly physical force upon another person...unless...He reasonably believes that such other person is committing or attempting to commit [one of certain enumerated predicate offenses, including robbery]". The people who got shot were clearly trying to commit robbery.
At least Goetz's story has a relatively happy ending. Too bad Goetz's shooting wasn't more accurate: "In May of that year, Ramseur {one of the men Goetz shot} held the gun while an associate raped, sodomized and robbed a pregnant eighteen-year-old woman on the rooftop of the Bronx building where he lived"
