Carlisle boy survives B.C. avalanche that took life of Aussie snowboarder TheSpec.com - Local - Carlisle boy survives B.C. avalanche that took life of Aussie snowboarder

A Carlisle boy was lucky to escape alive and uninjured from the avalanche at a ski resort in Kelowna, B.C., that killed a snowboarder.
John Lilakos, his two sons Jonathan and Nicholas, and family friend Zack Everett were skiing at Big White Ski Resort Sunday when the avalanche hit about 11 a.m. Lilakos, Jonathan and Zack managed to just get out of the way but Nicholas, 12, got caught by swirling chunks of snow and ice and was dragged down the ski hill.
"It was harrowing," said Linda Everett, mother of Zack, who greeted the returning vacationers late last night at Toronto's Pearson Airport. "It was a vacation they'll never forget, clearly. I don't think it will be something that will sink in until they get home. It was chaos."
She first found out about it when her son phoned home and said, "Mom, we were just in an avalanche." At first, she didn't believe him, but took him at his word when he told her someone was missing.
"I was stunned," said Everett, who works at the Carlisle Golf and Country Club. "I know he was putting on this big brave face, but the thing that bothered him the most is that he knew someone was missing."
The snowboarder was found in the avalanche debris on Monday. He has been identified as 21-year-old Leigh Barnier from Sydney, Australia. Several skiers and snowboarders were buried in the avalanche. The slide was wider than a football field and covered almost three hectares. It was up to eight metres deep at the centre.
John Lilakos, who runs his own business, told The Vancouver Province his group was crossing the slope about one-quarter of the way down. Jonathan and Zack, who are both 15, heard a loud crack like a sonic boom and felt the hill shaking.
"Avalanche!" they screamed.
Three of them got across the hill safely but Nicholas was caught in the swirling chunks of snow and ice and was carried 250 metres down the hill.
Lilakos told The Province he "freaked out."
"I saw Nicholas taken down the hill with no control, just smoke and snow. For five seconds, an eternity, I couldn't see him.
"Then a glove came up."
Nicholas' head poked out above the snow and he kept screaming, "I don't want to die!"
He was soon dug out, shivering and suffering from stomach pains. Everett said Nicholas was taken off the hill on a stretcher for medical treatment. He's expected to make a full recovery.
Lilakos told The Province his son feels lucky.
"He will have nightmares. He was going down, rolling and tumbling. He didn't know what was happening. Twenty feet farther to the right and he would have been in trouble in heavy snow."
Lilakos questions why the ski run was opened barely an hour before the snow slide.
"These guys are so lucky that 10, 20, 30 people didn't die," he said. "It was a sunny day. Were they under pressure to open because of the blue sky?"
Big White vice-president Michael Ballingall said weather conditions and the snow pack have been highly unusual this year, but he said the avalanche patrol had skied the hill and concluded it was safe.
Lilakos flew into Pearson International Airport late last night with Jonathan, who attends St. Mary's High School in Hamilton, Zack, a student at Waterdown District High School, and Nicholas, who goes to Balaclava Public School in Carlisle.
