Три дня в Ванкувере

Post by verik »

Would you be able to go for a 3-day long road trip?

Or would you like to spend a day taking in the homeless in Vancouver, and then go for a 2-day long road trip?

When you drive in BC, you can expect to share the road with very few other cars (especially if you drive during a work day). Most of the time you will have the 4-lane highway all to yourself. So it doesn't feel scary to be driving in the mountains during the winter. The site
http://drivebc.ca/
is misleading. When they say "use caution/delays", it doesn't mean "you will regret it if you use that highway", it just means that there is water or some snow on the road.

You should be prepared for it to rain in Vancouver. So you will probably not be able to visit some of the outdoor sights.

Until the start of January, Vancouver is hosting the Body Worlds exhibition.
http://www.bodyworlds.com/en.html
http://www.scienceworld.ca/bodyworlds

You may enjoy that. There are definitely a reasonable number of exhibits there.

The tickets at the Vancouver Aquarium are expensive. You can see some spectacular creatures there, but I was disappointed with the number of exhibits. You can view it all in 15-30 minutes. But they also have Beluga Whales show, where Beluga Whales do tricks, etc. The Aquarium is located in Stanley Park.

One scenic route that I know you will enjoy is
http://goo.gl/maps/WWXF

It will take about 2 days to drive that route.

If you have more time, you could try
http://goo.gl/maps/H7E3

This would be doable in three days, but you would not be able to see everything there is to see in Jasper and Banff. There is also a risk that there will be a snow storm and it will take you a long time to get back to Vancouver. Having said this, you will have a memorable time. On second thought, I read that TransCanada highway east of Banff is not the safest road. It is a 2-lane highway. You may want to avoid it during the winter. But like I said earlier, you will have winter tires, and there won't be too many cars to share the road with.

If it rains on the coast (and the visibility is low),
you may want to try
http://goo.gl/maps/sHkK

The drive will become scenic and the rain will stop soon after you reach the town of Hope, BC.

That drive is awesome. Especially if it doesn't rain on the coast.
The only part of that drive that is not scenic/interesting/exotic is the last 1.5 hours of the drive,
as you drive from Hope to Vancouver.

You start by driving along Highway 99 - the "Sea to Sky" highway.

For about two hours you get to drive along the coast. Then you pass Whistler.
Just before you get to Lillooet,

make sure to enjoy the view of Seton Lake at http://goo.gl/maps/4PAB
Unforunately you will not see the view below. But in the south west corner
of this photograph, you can see the road. You will be looking at the
lake (and up at the mountains) from that road.
Below is a view that you can see if you hike up the mountain.

This is what you will be seeing

The area around http://goo.gl/maps/5mV1 is also very exotic.

After that, from Cache Creek, until Hope, you will drive along
Trans-Canada highway, as it follows the Fraser River.

If it rains on the coast on the day when you begin your trip (and the forecast is for no rain the following day), you can drive in the opposite direction. You can start by driving from Vancouver to Hope, then follow the Fraser river (along Trans-Canada Highway) as you drive to Cache Creek. After that, follow Highway 99 as it travels towards the Pacific. It is a great feeling to finally see the Pacific after a long drive east on highway 99.

Now that I think of it, the drive Vancouver-Cache Creek-Lillooet-Whistler-Vancouver, is probably better than the drive
Vancouver-Whistler-Lillooet-Cache Creek-Vancouver. The first drive ends on a high note, as you drive along the beautiful coast. Choose the second drive only if the forecast is for no rain when you start your drive, and for rain the following day.

P.S. I'm serious
