Keep in mind, that you have to multiply all of the sentences by 0.4, to get the time the criminal will actually spend in prison.

In a recent "Exhibit A" episode, when the police confronted the murderer (the victim's husband) with proof that he is the killer, he told them "It is better to spend 5 years in prison than having to live with this woman for the rest of my life." He was sentenced to 10 years. He was released from prison "on parole" after serving 4 years.

All criminals are eligible to apply for parole after serving 40% of their sentence, and most of them get it.

It is important to be aware of the fact that Canadian "humane" justice system won't protect you. The police arrive on the scene after the crime is over, and there is nothing they can do to the criminal even if they catch him. Also, you are not allowed to have any weapons to protect yourself...
