Не знал я о существовании такого дела как rain check до сегодняшнего дня...
Суть в чем. Заехал в Шыну чайник жене купить на день св. Валентина. Тем более что она сама попросила, мол у них там сейчас именно такой чайник как она хочет - на sale. Приезжаю, едва его нашел на витрине. А цена на нем стоит уже regular, а не sale. Я зову тетушку - как так? Вот флайерс, вот 35 рублей офф, черным по английски. Тетушка говорит - сорри мол сэр, солд аут... Я делаю кислую мину и оъясняю что-то про жену и сегодняшний праздник. Она мне - хотите rain check? Я ей - а что это? Оказывается, это такая бумашшка, по которой Шына обязуется продать мне этот же товар по сегодняшней цене, даже если я приеду после окончания sale (когда товар будет в наличии). Окак. Конечно, я снял с нее этот rain check.
Залез в гугол. Этимология этого понятия примерно такая:
rain check - a ticket stub entitling the holder to admission to a future event if the scheduled event was cancelled due to rain.
Т.е. Вы пришли на футбол (теннис, ипподром, тараканьи бега), зашли на стадион, удобно устроились в 10-м ряду, пьете пиво, а тут пошел дождь, и event отменили... В этом случае корешок Вашего билета и будет rain check. Ну или выдадут Вам что-то другое.

Bring the Ad With You
Often times the same flyers can be found in the front of the stores, but it never hurts to bring your own copy in case you need it.
Ask for Help
Ask an employee of the store to help you locate the item if you are unable to find it. If it is determined that the item is sold-out ask for a "rain check" or for a comparable item at the same sale price. A "rain check" will allow you to purchase the desired item, later, at the sale price.

А сколько раз мы просто разворачивались и уезжали! Или не мы одни такие валенки??
. Не надо расстраиваться - в большинстве случаев продавец вернет разницу. Что и логично. Всегда же можно вернуть товар (хотел подарить другу, а у него уже есть; или жене цвет не нравится, хотите поговорить с ней? сейчас наберу
) и затем купить по цене со скидкой.
