No kogda umen'shayut pensiyu(Old Age Security, OAS) (iz za togo chto prozhili menshe 40ka let), uvelichivayut Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). Tak chto neplohoy minimum dayut dazhe novopribivshim roditelyam immigrantov. A eshe razreshayut zhit v "subsidized apartment".
By the way, some employers have their own pension plans. For example, Teachers' Pension Plan works the following way: you are eligible to receive full pension as soon as
(your age) + (# years working for Toronto School Board) = 85.
This means that if you start working as a Toronto teacher at age 39, you will be eligible to receive full pension at age 62.
Your full pension is: (average of the annual salaries for the best 5 years)*0.025*(# years working for Toronto School Board)
If you decide to retire before
(your age) + (# years working for Toronto School Board) = 85, you will receive reduced pension. For every point that
(your age) + (# years working for Toronto School Board) is below 85, you will lose 5%.
So, if you start working at 39, and decide to retire at 60, then at 60
your (# years working for Toronto School Board) = 60-39=21. So
(your age) + (# years working for Toronto School Board) = 60 + 21 = 81
85-81 = 4
so your pension will be reduced by 4*5% = 20%
Thus at age 60, your pension will be
(1-0.20)*(average of the annual salaries for the best 5 years)*0.025*(# years working for Toronto School Board) =
0.8*(80000)*0.025*21 = 33600, assuming that you earn $80000 in your last 5 years of being a teacher.
If you wait until 62, you will receive full pension of
(80000)*0.025*23 = 46000
A Canadian teacher who started working at age 25 and retires when they reach the 85 factor, can retire at the age of 55 (55+30years of experience = 85)
and receive a pension of
(80000)*0.025*30=60000

> вот, наверное, глупый вопрос: а какие либо налоги с пенсии нужно платить?
Да, нужно. Не имеет значения откуда доходы (то есть как они называются - зарплата или пенсия). Пока Вы работаете, Вы можете откладывать RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan, in US it is called "401-K").

When someone has no savings and no income, they live in a subsidized apartment. I used to know a number of seniors in this situation (including my grandmother). In my experience, these apartments are good (i.e. clean).
My grandmother could meet all of her needs when she was receiving GIS. When she started to receive the pension, it was even more money.
Of course, some Canadian seniors have a habit of spending $15-20 for a breakfast for two at a fast food restaurant. I imagine they would have problems.
However, most Canadians have RRSP's in addition to the pension...
